We already have 5 qualified national computer scorers (thank you Reg Alsop) and these are being put to work to spread the knowledge far and wide.

On Sunday 7th February the programme to educate our boxers, coaches and officials began in earnest at a full day’s workshop at the Riverside Youth Project in Bristol. Fifty of the Western Counties junior and senior boxers together with seventeen coaches attended the workshop and participated fully in a very practical days work.

Boxers and coaches alike now have a different perspective on judging and appreciate the need to leave no doubt in the mind of any judge that a point has been scored!

Here are a series of photographs to illustrate the concentration and commitment from our members:

The work has only just begun and Des Charnock from Launceston (and Divisional Secretary for Cornwall & Dorset) has taken on the mantle of Computer scoring Guru for Western Counties. Des realises that the real challenge is to produce teams of confident operators who can handle a few moments of stress but already the volunteers are coming forward.

Des Charnock, has boundless energy and an excellent working knowledge of the system. Western Counties has the technology, the drive and energy to train operators and the desire to see its boxers no longer handicapped by non-exposure to this international scoring system.

Our thanks must go to Sport England for their financial support of our mission and we plan to repay their foresight with a twenty first century judging system for all who participate in the sport.
Roger Eady
Development Officer

Captions for photo's below accepted(within reason)!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; First to box for the Avonmouth based boxing club was 12-year-old Tom Cave matched against Harry Bryant of Trowbridge Boxing Academy.
Said Head Coach and Dad Garry Cave “Tom boxed really well, he put his heart and soul into it, never taking a backward step, scoring with head and body combinations. I couldn’t have asked for more from him and he more than deserved his second pts win”.
Next to box for the NSC was 15-year old-Cory Ciati Boxing the host clubs Will Holt, after three hard fought rounds Ciati lost a points decision. Informed Cave ”You can’t win them all, Cory give it everything he had but was beaten on the night by a better boxer, there’s always next time” Third up was welterweight Sam Fitzgerald boxing Frome’s Jake Toogood and after three very closely contested rounds won a majority points decision. Said Cave “ I was very pleased with Sam’s performance he trains hard and his boxing is really coming on and that’s his first win under his belt”. Last up was 17-year senior middleweight Shane ‘Da Bomber’ Brown boxing in his debut bout versus the more experienced Alan Wilson of Blackmore Vale ABC. The shorter harder punching Brown was to strong for the taller Blackmore Vale stylist forcing a third round standing count after repeatedly scoring with his overhand right, Brown going on to secure a unanimous pts win. Summed up Cave “To get three wins from four bouts and away from home was a fantastic result for the club, I’m really pleased for the lads, they deserve all the success in the world. We’ve had a great start to the New Year with NSC juniors Jerry Connors and Dan Shackell both winning the Sunday before at the Forest Oaks show and we’ve had 25 wins from 35 bouts this season”.

If you would like to take up boxing for the NSC please contact head coach Garry Cave on 07876 233621, the clubs trains Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights 7 till 8:30pm at the Smelters Gym next to Avonmouth Rugby club, Barracks Lane.

Guernsey V Western Counties

The team met at Bristol Airport for their lunchtime departure, all were in good spirits. A team meeting was held where Dave Dungay was selected as Captain, and the boxers intorduced to each other. A good flight was particularly enjoyed by Mike Freeman and Jerry Connors, taking to the air for the first time.
Rooms were allocated at the Ambassador Hotel, and the host 'Basil' made us all very welcome. Soup and sandwiches followed before a gentle stroll into town.
All the boxers came in at the required weight, except T Maunder from Guernsey. This meant Rahim Nanji's bout was off, a real shame for a smashing young lad, who then took on the camera man role for the night. A team meeting was held for final instructions before the action started.

Bout 1
NSC boxer Jerry Connors got proceedings underway against J Gilvear. A superb opening contest saw Gilvear edge a close points decision. A great effort from Jerry, just pipped after boxing well.

Bout 2
Walcots Tommy McDonagh oozed class against Alderney boxer C Sumner. A crunching body shot had Sumner down for the 8 count in round 1. Tommy piled on the presure and the style to ease home on points.

Bout 3
NSC's Bradley Collingbourne was going well against Gage Demore, until his nose started to bleed heavily. After 2 inspection from the referee, the coach withdrew his boxer as he was unable to stem the flow.

Bout 4
Broad Plain's Mathew Donnely and Alan Myres engaged in a toe to toe battle of attrition right from the start. This was a cracking contest, that went one way then the other. Donnely getting the nod to a standing ovation from the packed dinner crowd.

Bout 5
Cornishman Marcus Hodgeson faced tough Bradley Watson, who came out all guns blazing. After a torrid first round, Hodgeson rallied in the second. Round three saw Marcus on top, with stunning counter attacks and some brilliant footwork. Watson was on the receiving end at the final bell, but had done enough to win.

Bout 6
Forest Oaks boxer Mike Freeman faced J Woolnough who seemed to have his measure. Only a busy final round, where he never stopped working would be enough. Mike getting a majority win that could have gone either way. Very close.

Bout 7
Team Captain Dave Dungay from Devonport met up with W Calladine, who clearly wanted to take Daves head off. Dave stuck to his instructions in the final round, and forund the room for a stunning right cross. Calladines legs turned to jelly, and the referee waved it off. A great Captains performance.

Bout 8
Neal Herbert crossed swords with C Pearson, and seemed to have the bout under control. Three rounds of action with Mayflowers Herbert on top failed to impress the judges. Pearson winning by unanimous decision to the amazement of the away camp.

Bout 9
The decider. With the scores level at 4-4, Mike Rose faced off against T Duff. Another super contest had the crowd on its feet, with Rose starting particularly strongly. The game Duff couldnt keep Rose away, and all three judges declared Fromes Mike, and the Western Counties team, the winner.

Both sets of boxers and coaches then met up back at the Ambassador for a buffet and drinks. Guernsey made us very welcome, and we were treated like kings for the entire weekend. Basil served up some top quality food and was a great host.

The boxers behaved well, and listened to the coaches instructions.

Team Manger: Alan Brightman
Coaches Steve Gawron and Les Brooking

Western Counties Select Team V Jersey Leonis club

Western Counties Select Team V Jersey Leonis club
17th -19th April Team Report :

Travelling by Condor Ferries from Poole, Dorset on Friday the 17th April, a team of 12 boxers 4 coaches and 1 official ( Lynn Holmes ) left for a Western Counties select team verses the Jersey Leonis club boxing tournament, the show held for the first time at the Radisson SAS waterfront hotel, St Hellier, Jersey.

The weigh in was conducted on arrival at the La Place hotel, allowing plenty of time for the boxers to rest before the following days tournemount (Sat 18th April).

With 10 team bouts and 1 supporting bout the crowd paying between £25 + £30 were rewarded with an excellent nights boxing, resulting with a tie at 5-5.
The team was made up of both novice / inter juniors and senior boxers from City of Gloucester, Poole, National Smelting and Empire ABC.
Returning on Sunday 19th April to Weymouth, Dorset and onwards by minibus to home addresses.

Team Coaches : Neal Partridge, Shaun Holmes, Leo Toms, Nigel Purcell
OIC : Brian Pollard
Results :
Supporting bout
Liam Allen-(Poole)(won points Unanimous) v Jake Stevens (Gloucester)

Team bouts
Steven Buchan-Jersey Leonis v Reece MacCavoy-(Poole)( won points majority )

Ben Smyle-Jersey Leonis(won points majority )v Dene Heckford (Poole)
St Gerards in a team match billed as ‘The Southern Showdown’ where the teams competed for the ‘Bristol v Brighton Challenge Cup’ sponsored by R & M Building Services. There where also supporting bouts of Smelters boxers against local clubs on this twelve bout bill.

Informed Smelters head coach Garry Cave “Opening the show for us was 11-year-old Blake Bowler matched against Sydenham’s Callum James in a skills contest. Both young boxers displayed a full array in both defensive and attacking skills and after three rounds of keenly contested action both lads had their hands raised as there’s only winners in skills bouts.

Second on the bill was 11-year-old southpaw Jerry ‘Mighty Mouse’ Connors pitched against George Shelldrake of Watchet ABC. Connors boxed on the front foot and took the fight right to Shelldrake. After three rounds of non-stop action Connors won a unanimous decision and the first win for the host club. Said Cave “That’s two wins for Jerry in two weeks and two very good performances he’s fulfilling the potential he’s shown in the gym and I think this lad is one to keep an eye out for.

In the third bout 13-year-old welterweight Sam ‘Bigmac’ Ash boxed in the first team bout of the evening versus St Gerard’s John Hunt. Said Cave “Full respect and thanks to St Gerard’s they traveled all the way from Sussex on a mid week night with just the one junior, it’s that kind of dedication and support that allows clubs like ours to put these boxing shows on.”
Reported Cave” In the opener Hunt showed superior boxing skills and punch variation to take the lead, I thought Sam was in for a boxing lesson. But the second and third rounds where all Sam Ash as he began to find the target with straight punch combinations as Hunt was clearly feeling the pace under the constant pressure” Sam Ash winning unanimous points and two wins out of two for the Smelters stable.

Fourth on the bill and hoping to maintain the run of winning results was Jerry’s older brother Tom ‘Tucker’ Connors matched against a very tough pressure fighter in Lewis Bremner of Wells ABC.
Informed Cave ‘Tuckers’ had a great season winning seven out of eight bouts and only losing in the Championship Quarter finals after winning the Western Counties Title. Tucker used his boxing skills with quick footwork and hand speed to pick off the front foot boxing of Bremner. We had a game plan to box on the outside, side step and counter as Bremner pressed forward and Tucker executed the plan perfectly to take a points win” This was good night for the Connors with both brothers winning on their home show.

Fifth on the bill was an all Bristol affair with 14-year-old light welter weight NSC’s Jason Davies boxing Empire’s Tim Cutler. What a hard fought bout this turned out to be with both boxers matching each other punch for punch, at times Cutler looked the stronger as he edged ahead with his power packed jabs that had bloodied Davies’s nose.
Said Cave “This was the bout of the night with both young lads giving it everything they had, it was an absolute war! Cutler won a majority and deserved decision and was awarded best boxer of the night with Davies picking up the best Sportsman’s trophy. Jas really has improved this season he’s come on so much over his last few bouts I’m sure this lad will go on to be another champion for the club.

In the sixth bout 14-year-old Patchway Schoolboy Tyler ‘Tiger’ Davies was boxing Connor Murphy of Watchet ABC in they’re fourth encounter. Davies had narrowly beaten Murphy to take the Western Counties title but had lost another close bout to Murphy at the Wells show three weeks before, making it two wins to one for Murphy. Said Cave “ We lost Tyler’s original opponent in the lead up to the show, but thanks to the fantastic support of Watchett boxing club where able to match this up a couple of days before. It’s always a close bout and this one proved to be no different with Davies winning with the narrowest of margins to square the series up at two bouts apiece. The Tigers really come on this season and moves to 8 wins from 11 bouts plus a Western Counties title”.

Bout 11 and the final bout of the night to feature an NSC boxer, saw senior welterweight Sam Mogg v Rob Fernley of Trowbridge. With Fernley hoping to get back to winning ways after a long lay off.
Said Cave “ We thought the Moggster was in for a really tough night as Fernley is a very experienced boxer and we’d heard he had a wicked left hook. So we’d worked on a plan to nullify his hook but it never came in to play as Sam buckled Fernley about 1 minute into round one with a rib bending body shot, fair dos he come off his knees three times to beat the count, but every time he got nailed again, but after three counts in a round that’s your lot and the ref called an end to it. Sam really can dig to the body and once you’ve been nailed with a sickener like that it’s very hard to comeback. I’m sure Rob will get back to his best as it was a tough bout to come back to after a long lay off.

Team Bouts
3. Dave Murphy and Terry Richards of Southmead put on another great contest, which for me was the bout of the evening. The boxing was of an excellent quality and the evening was excellently organised by NSC, this is our forth trip to Bristol in 12mths and we always receive a warm welcome, we look forward to welcoming the Bristol lads back when we defend the cup next season!"

Full results:-
Juniors 1.
